Three KEY Teachers
Birding at Forsythe NWR in New Jersey. Photo taken by a gifted Upper Midwest painter and scholar
whose 4-octave voice dances with angels. She took Carroll to meet her prodigy teacher in Austin, TX.
The lass was the only person Carroll ever allowed to watch him paint.

"My lovely fiancée called me 'Genius'
and her 'Tiger.' I enjoyed that.
Her mom told me, 'You're a mess,'
with a humorous, beaming grin.
She was right! It only took me
20+ years to straighten that out.
Didn't need a 260 IQ to know.

The Artist's Maternal Grandfather, an Irish country doctor
from a farming family, immigrated from Rawdon, Quebec.
(Photo Below) The artist bird watching with his doctor parents on the great
East Coast Flyway at Brigantine NWR. His pioneering Midwestern mom,
Virginia Jane Smiley, was a board certified pediatrician who then became
a board certified "child's" dermatologist and joined her husband's practice;
Inspired by her dad, a Dakota family doctor, who died of leukemia when
she was only ten years old, during the Dakota Dust Bowl famine and
the Stock Market crash, and the Great Depression, she earned her way
through USD-Vermillion (4.0, PoliSci) Phi Beta Kappa (ΦΒΚ, America's
most prestigious honor society). Her mom was the librarian in the town's
first library, in her dad's office. Initially, her life was driven by her father's
death when she was only ten-years-old. Then, she lost her first child.
His mother researched the mumps vaccine with the Drs. Henley in Alaska,
and was Dr. Bill Nelson's ("The Father of Pediatrics") first editor of North
American Pediatrics. She was beautiful, athletic, adventurous, and greatly
loved the outdoors, cool weather, field guides, and wildlife. The meritorious
lady had a superb, long, world-traveling birder's Life List, and even boated
down the world's largest river, the Amazon, after launching in Quito, EC.
She negotiated and kept the books for their businesses, recruited riding
school headmasters for Fox Hollow Farms, and was a huge fan of Chris
Evert, ... "Pop" was smitten by his 4.0 kitten. Her knight in shining armor
bought her a 1751 King George horse estate, put in a tennis court, added
countless barn cats (She loved cats), a kennel full of Bassets, and the ca.
1732 manor with a 60-horse barn next door. They were MFEO—UDDTP.
